Epic Games

Put your frag hats on,  GameTap has struck a deal with Epic Games to distribute the preeminent Unreal series. This new agreement grants GameTap the rights to release for subscription the following titles (deep breath); Unreal Gold, Unreal II: The Awakening, Unreal Tournament: Game of The Year Edition, Unreal Tournament 2004: Editor’s Choice Edition, and Unreal Tournament 3 Black (including the Titan Pack). Additionally we will be selling these titles DRM-free in our Buy and Download Store.  Catch some trailers after the jump.

Unreal Gold

Released in 1998, Unreal was lauded for its incredible graphics and advanced AI.

Unreal Tournament: Game Of The Year Edition

Released in 1999, UT perfected the deathmatch formula established by Quake I and brought home several Game Of Year awards.

Unreal Tournament III Black

Released in 2007, UTIII was widely praised by critics and recently saw the release of the Titan Pack, bringing the game additional maps, weapons, power-ups, play modes, and patching it with improved AI, and better network performance.

Rock on! I own Unreal 2k3, but never got it working well on my old lappy. Mey new lappy is miles better than that, so it should handel 2k4 really well. I was just about to run out and get 2k6’s xbox version too.

Will Gametap be releasing these games in Canada or just the USA?

Cool. It’s too bad only the buy and download version will be DRM-free, though. UT is really a game series that is known for its mods, which I guess won’t be available to the subscription users. I’m not sure anyone still (or even ever) played vanilla UT. Still, I don’t suppose it’s technically possible to add a DRM-free title to the subscription service, even with the new infrastructure.

Still, it’s nice to see the influence GoG is having on other digital stores, even if you are still removing DRM only from titles that GoG also offers — are you still offering the Fallout series DRM-free also?

*sniff sniff* I smell a GT LAN party coming on!
I’ll host if I’m at school when they get here :)

Awesome! I was actually considering buying Unreal from Steam, but it looks like I don’t need to now. (If GT4 ever starts working right for me, anyway.) Let’s hope this is just the beginning of a long, healthy, and entirely Epic relationship- that would be any relationship that involves Tyrian, the best shootemup ever.

actually ut3 stores mods in the “my documents” folder. that means you will still be able to install mods.

@Bob, yes the older games are still DRM-free, this can be chalked up to the publishers being more lax with older titles, more so than gog’s influence.

Hello, developer for the Unreal 227 patch from Oldunreal here.

Is that regular unreal gold or Anthology? if it’s anthology, it will automatically be incompatible with _all_ pre existing online servers and anthology servers are incompatible with all other versions. There is a fix here :
http://www.oldunreal.com/specialpatches.html

OMP pack version includes new renderers so the game can actually run on newer computers.

*sniffle* I was hoping there would be some Epic Classic games on the list. I still refuse to pay $25 to get the classic Solar Winds games.

» LittlestCthulhu said: Apr 7, 2009

Solar Winds is distributed by a different company, Epic Classics.

My friend and I used to play UT while listening to Drowning Pool. Oh, the 90’s how glad I am that you’re over

unreal looks awesome but no it is not the best shooter ever it can not compete with halo 3 not in same realm

» Mauro said: Apr 10, 2009

John Unreal it’s one of the best shooter ever created, just inform yourself before talking. You’re comparing a 11 year old game with a game released recently and more they’re completely different. Unreal had one of the most advanced engine for the time. Inform before to speak, we don’t need fanboy.

so… will this be able to run online against others when it comes out? or do we need to use a lan with other people. some of the older games that have come here (i’m looking at you sacred gold) didn’t like us playing online! so, epic, if you are reading this, please make sure to send gametap enough cd-keys or whatever it is they use for everyone. also, Epic are the people that made Gears, if i remember correctly… does this mean that we might eventually get Gears?
