Starting next week, we’re going to return a large chunk of our free games back to the Gold vault. They will still be available, but only to GameTap Gold subscribers.
As many of you know, over the past year or so we’ve released well over one hundred games for free, in order to entice people to sample what GameTap has to offer and, hopefully, subscribe to our service. This strategy has worked incredibly well for us, and now we’re ready to move on.
If you are currently a free GameTap user, hit the jump to see which games are going away. You’ve got until Thursday, January 22 to either finish up what you’re playing or, if you’re smart, sign up for GameTap Gold. Your saved games will be waiting for you! Even with the economy as tough as it is right now, $59.95 for unlimited access to over 1,000 games is an absolute steal - that’s less than 17 cents a day, or less than 6 cents a game.
If you can’t afford that, don’t worry, we’ve still got quite a few games for you to try out. Not only are we keeping over 40 games around for you, we’ll also continue to entice you with weekly samplers - full, free games you can play for one week only. Going into the future, these games include Sid Meier’s Pirates!, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, X-Com: UFO Defense, and many more we have not yet announced. You can guarantee that a lot of the games we’re removing will make brief appearances in the future!
Full list of removals after the jump.

Wow.
This is really disappointing to me. I had several games downloaded, that I will not get to play now. to be quite honest, them doing this without trading new games into the free rotation makes me less likely to pay.
That is like all of them!
Sucks thats a list of good games, i had planned to at least keep the service as free, since i alreaddy payed for a month or two of it only to find the PC games don’t work on vista. how about you do something to make it worth subscribing to gametap, insted of getting rid of more subscribers by forcing them to pay for games that either aren’t supporting their OS or just were already free.
Not everything on the web can be free. This is no different than downloading a time limited demo and then having to pony up to keep playing.
Yeah, so instead of blowing smoke up our collective rear end, why not tell us the truth about why you’re doing this? Times are hard for everyone, and it’s more likely that you’re pulling most of the free games because you want to entice fence-straddlers into paying for the service. While that makes good business sense on the surface, the reality is that if these people never found an excuse to pay for your service before, they’re not going to now. Taking away all their free games is going to have an effect completely opposite the one you’re hoping it will have. I wish you all the luck in the world, but I do think you’d get better results by being up front with your members than you will if you continue to treat them like gullible fools.
Of course this is a bummer for anyone, we all like getting things for free.
However, GameTap provides a great service and they aren’t kidding when they say their prices are unbeatable.
In fact, with the way the economy is going, 60 bucks for a year of gaming is a very tempting offer. The only reason I won’t immediately become a gold member is that I have a pile of backlog games here still in wrappers. ..I’ve all but stopped buying new games though, so when I’ve burned through those, there’s a good chance I’ll be knocking on Gametaps door.
In the meantime, I guess my almost completed game of Psychonauts will jump to the front of my priorities.
Thank you Gametap for letting us check out all the freebies, and I for one will be sticking around for the future.
I have had a full subscription for at least two years (one year when they had a way more expensive subscription price) and I just wanted to follow up the complaints about Gametap. In my experience, Gametap has not been unstable at all. I’ve had few, if any, problems. Problems that do occur are minor and fixed quickly. Also, the price for the subscription is fantastic. You get the chance to play so many games, some classic, some recent, but all fun.
This is simply my experience, of course. I cannot speak for others. BUT I don’t think people should complain about Gametap finally getting rid of most of the free games. They gave people a piece of an amazing service for FREE for quite a while. Appreciate it and buy a subscription (to enjoy it more) or move on.
Well I was in the middle of playing through Thief but I understand the decision to remove these games from the free section. A gold membership is a good enough deal to warrant this sort of thing and I’m sure I’ll be back some day.
This is a shock to me. I was enjoying GameTap games cause of this you cant find these games at your regular gaming store anymore(well mine anyway). But I enjoyed the free service but I probably wont pay due to today’s times and all. I will enjoy the games I played some other time.
This is it for me. I’m signing out.
I can’t help but remember I story I read on the internet about a guy who ran a video game shop. There were a bunch of kids who kept coming in, playing the demos for hours, hanging out, and leaving. They never bought anything. After about three months, he got tired of them and kicked them out of the shop. On their way out, the kids cried, “Well we can just take our business elsewhere!” to which the shopowner replied “Oh no! How ever will I survive without the zero dollars you’ve been spending here.”
Really, I’ve had fun with the free games I’ve played here. If I were more of a hard core gamer, I probably would fork out the money. But I have other time commitments. This isn’t a service geared toward the “recreational gamer.” It was nice while it lasted, but I’m not going to whine about a freebie disappearing.
Why are they doing this? All the free games I play are on that list. All the good games are gone! I might un-install gametap.
WHAT!? They take Psychonauts fromt the free server!? Now I’ll be never able to play anymore! I didn’t even finish the game T_T
You bunch of sissy ungrateful whiners…
It’s only $5.00 per month…you broke dick dogs.
You have that in change in your pocket every month..
Do what you gotta do GT.. you don’t need these type of lame customers anyway..
“Gonna uninstall gamestap” yeah right.. go ahead you fake lame gamers.. It’s given you a good time for free for awhile , now you want to crap all over it..
Frankly, GameTap folks, I don’t care one way or another. As long as you don’t support Vista x64, you don’t get my attention. The day you release a client that works on Vista x64 is the day I subscribe. It’s that simple.
IF YOU CARE ABOUT GAMERS, YOU WILL NOT DO THIS! AS SOON AS THIS HAPPENS, I WILL TAKE GT OFF OF MY “FAVORITE WEBSITES” LIST ON MY WEBSITE. IT WAS #3 AND HAS DROPPED TO #7 (OF 10). I WILL TELL AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE TO USE YOUR SERVICE UNTIL I CAN PLAY PSYCHONAUTS AND FALLOUT 1 FREE AGAIN. ALTHOUGH MY CAPSLOCK KEY IS BROKEN, DISALLOWING ME TO TYPE LOWERCASE, I DO NOT APOLOGIZE, AS YOU DON’T SEEM WORTHY OF IT.
I honestly don’t understand why some people are complaining so much. They gave you free access to games, which was nice of them to do for however long they were willing to keep it up. But just because you got used to it doesn’t mean it’s become your right to provided free games to play.
And yes, this move will probably make more fence-sitters un-install the client than purchase a gold membership. I’ve let my own gold account expire because I now run a 64 bit Vista computer which Gametap doesn’t support. Lots of people here have listed legit reasons they aren’t going to pay for the service, but then they follow them up by grousing about how they’re getting screwed because Gametap won’t give them free access anymore.
So if it isn’t worth investing in, just say “hey thanks for the free games” and move on.
Taking away the free games may be a necessary evil that Gametap has to play, but give something back in return. I enjoyed the free Gold trial for the 2 months and wanted to continue to pay for it, however I have 3 children that all enjoy playing Gametap with me. Gametap only allows 2 users to play simultaneously on the same account. Why not bump that up to 5?
All I played was Sacred Gold, not much else interested me. I guess I’ll just go buy it for 10 bucks. Thanks anyway!
I’m amazed, no strike that I’m not amazed, it’s just more of what America has become, right, give me everything for free. I agree with the previous post, but will use a few less colorful metaphor’s, get a life, give the game tap employees what they deserve for working endless hours to provide you with entertainment you’d have to pay hundreds of $’s for had you purchased the original game. Think about it, a few lawns mowed, a few driveways cleared of snow, maybe 2 or 3 cars detailed for as year of unlimited gaming. It’s about time Game Tap started charging for their work and the bait they used to lure you in lingered much to long. Here’s your next line, “Thank you Game Tap for all the free games. Knowing you’ve sacrificed so much to fill my gaming needs I solomely swear to be a faithful customer, till death do us part. OK, now go mow a lawn and game until your fingers bleed. Gaame on!!!
“Gametap got greedy.
I agree, a rotating free game selection would be better than just taking so many away.”
Gametap got greedy… rofl. How can you be that stupid? Gametap started a free service, spending their time and money on shit for free, and now they need the money, and you say they’re greedy? You’re the greedy one, you useless piece of waste.
I was once a Gold subscriber, but had too many problems, especially regarding downloading - it seemed to be throttling downloads or else their servers were just overloaded all the time, as I don’t think it ever used more than 10% of my available bandwidth. This was especially frustrating trying to play URU with frequent downloads needed as one moved from place to place.
Anyhow, I unsubscribed from Gold, and occasionally played some of the other games if/when they worked. And I am talking about XP - no excuse.
Anyhow, when I saw the email, I thought I’d read this blog entry and see what was going on.
I can understand how they might want to make some money, and freebies don’t generate a profit. OTOH, if they offered a smooth, high-performance platform with excellent games that didn’t take forever to download (several hours for a couple-hundred megabyte file over a 10 megabit connection?) then it might be the great deal they present it as. Maybe someday it will be - let me know when it really works as advertised, with a good assortment of games I actually want to play.
Did you take away the $9.95 option? I signed up for a monthly thing last year
Gametap, I love you, but no thanks.
Sorry!
As a european I do not have acces to the gold service (I’ve tried). Since gametap probably already have the licenses, maybe they could make a “silver” account where non-us citizens (and the really cheap usc) could access the previously free games.
I’d pay for that.
Hell, I would pay that for just being able to play psychonauts legally.
To be honest, this does kind of make me want to finally subscribe. The only games I really like on gametap though are Warlords Battlecry III and Disciples…which are both being removed…
Eh, I suppose I can just wait until Disciples III is released in a couple of months…still, I don’t think Warlords Battlecry 4 will be seen until like, 2011. If they end up making it.
Seriously, get support for Vista 64 and you’ve got a subscription. Gametap is good for the easy access and lobbying of some of the older console games, but my main focus was to play the PC games. And since it doesn’t support vista64 i’ve been unable to enjoy what i was coming for (Yes, i know i can go go buy the games and play them, but its a play with a set up community thing and ease of access with a collection of friends.)
No vista 64 = no subscription.
less free games= less people willing to look at gametap and a possible overall decline in the community at large, since you’re just taking most of the good games anyway.
you want more subscriptions, get better OS support to get a wider base, add even more games (which you do a great job at so far), pricing is good too.
but my main problem still remains at no vista 64 support and thats about it (and no i’m not wasting time to partition my harddrive to install 32bit or xp, i shouldn’t need to do that to play a service. :P)
Actually, $60 for a year is a steal.
When I first saw that games were going away, and then saw the list, I was livid. I saw the price and blew my top. The article doesn’t make it clear that it’s for a whole year. Hasn’t the price been $10/mo? I already thought that was a pretty good price, and this will be $5/mo. Less, actually.
I’m still kind of bummed - I’m a casual player. There are 3 or 4 games I play, and even then, only a few hours a month go into them. Different pay levels for different amounts of play would be a pleasing idea to me. Like Netflix does.
I even have a playlist of “games I’d like to play if I go gold”, and this may be just the excuse I need to play them.
I don’t understand this very much, Yet i do..
Guess you can call me a freeloader, I never paid for a month/year because of budget issues
I played a few games here and there but with the adds and stuff they put out to my email and so on they at least keep me up to date on the stuff they have.(and visit to there sites) Which might of caught my interest later on enough that i would of joined
With the loss of the only thing keeping my interest i will have to uninstall and basically forget about this service, till they do something that re-catches my interest
Guess the ride is over , I would wish you luck but i am sure they are doing fine. There will always be a demand for the classic games and people who are better off then me willing to pay for it
Later
i knew it was going to come up to this, times are hard these days and every business is trying to get a penny out of every customer, only that on gametaps side it seems fair but not to me, I m in africa and i tried to subscribe many times and i was told my bank doesnt support the service for some reason, so i was forced to remain free member, taking most of the free games will only make people in the same situation as mine to close their accounts and uninstall gametap, atleast if you took out your pc games and leave all the old arcade games free, well we will scourer through the ones left and hope to have a good time
i dont criticise gametap, they are running a business and you cant run a business where clients come in and take sodas and hotdogs for free
Idiots, that is my oppinion of all you whiners. Gametap is freaking awesome! Have a problem with a game? it’s probably the game itself, and they will help you through to a fix!
Yea they have a vista compat problem, but look at the age of a lot of the games. You try getting them to run on vista!.
They have given you a lot for free. they need money. So if you cant help, that’s that. you still get stuff for free, some pretty good games. you still get to try their stuff. and not pay a dime.
Gametap, you are awesome! I’m going to be a subscriber for as long as i can
Wow. I enjoyed the free ride that GT gave me and i knew it couldn’t last forever but this i did not expect. I expected GT to just not add any new free games but a major cut of almost everything free? Even the the games that are still free aren’t that great with maybe a few exceptions. The wide list of free games that GT gave was what first attracted me to it and i think the cut of these games will only make others over look GT much quicker than if they did have such a wide selection of games for free. January 22nd will not be a good day for GT
Loved using GameTap, is an amazing service but as a UK user am unable to subscribem would qutie happily pay for gold as there are so many old classics available, will be a shame to lose what i’ve invested my precious time playing but it’s been free a long time and i suppose it’s better to lose the freebies than lose the company.
I’d happily pay for Gold; in fact, I’ve wanted to for ages but Gametap won’t let me because I live in the UK, so now I’ll be uninstalling.
But thanks anyway.
oh come on
i didn’t get to finish psychonaughts and i lost my job so i don’t have the money for subscription…
well thanks for the free games to play guys. I love GT and u guys are doing a good job. but really u need to get all of the games to work for Vista. some of the free games u had up to play i couldnt play. but keep up the good work and get these games working for vista and i’ll start paying for GT.
I understand you removed URU I was wondering why and if you plan to bring it back, I had only been 0n it a couple of times then i went back a couple of months later it had gone.
Paul B.
As a european user, this may be the end of Gametap for me. No Fallout, no Psychonauts, no Deus Ex… I am not able to get a Gold account, so I’ll just uninstall it and wait until you change this decision.
I think it’s fair from GameTap to do such: 17cts / day is nothing for so many games offered. I like the fact that there will still be some free games to discover new game categories or test the service of GameTap. I appreciate the notice and the way you do it! Long life to GameTap and I hope you will bring more prmium games to the Gold subscribers…
I’d love to subscribe but I’m in that third world country known as “The UK” and you won’t let me.
So while I don’t have a problem with this, it is enough to make it not worth keeping the free one around and since you don’t think I’m good enough to give you cash money doesn’t leave me a lot.
Agurk - Just to solve one of your little problems, I bought Psychonauts the other day from PC World for £1.97, might be worth a look in your local for that at least.
Whilst it is indeed a shame they’re removing the free games, what does my head in even more is that I REALLY want to subscribe to it, but seeing as I live outside the US, I can’t. Which sucks. I’d lay the dollars down in a heart-beat if you could get around the US-only publishing option (which seems strange seeing as I can play the free games in the UK).
As Agurk said, GameTap’s lack of support for European customers means that as of January 22nd, GameTap leaves my machine and isn’t going back until they sort it.
Thanks for the free gameplay but like someothers I cant take up the offer to go gold i live in the UK and it is not on offer here which leaves me with metaboli to go for.
I’m not surprised at this decision, but at the same time, I don’t bear GameTap any ill will whatsoever. I was a Gold member for a good while, mainly because GameTap stepped out on faith and hosted Myst Online: Uru Live. I even met some of the GameTap staff at Mysterium 2006, and was quite impressed with them. I only cancelled my Gold subscription when GameTap dropped Myst Online, due (not surprisingly) to the tanking economy. I decided to divert my meager gaming funds to supporting the Myst community on Second Life, but got cold feet and backed out. Folks, keep in mind that the economy apparently hit GameTap pretty hard too. Realize that they were bought by a European company when Turner was also feeling the pinch. It’s been hard for us all, and frankly, I’m thankful that GameTap is still around at all. In fact, I may well reinstall the GT client and explore what free games there are, just to show my support. You go, GameTap - and thanks very much for all you’ve done for the gaming community!
Mowog
I’ll agree with others regarding Vista 64. Gametap is great and I was a Gametap subscriber for years; however, I was very saddened to see that the majority of Windows-based games would not work on a 64-bit system because of a third-party vendor.
Yes I do realize users can create a dual-boot system; however, I’m not going to run two operating systems simply to run one application. As others have said; Gametap staff - incorporate 64-bit support and I can guarantee that you’ll have another subscriber again.
Thanks for the memories and please, stop teasing me and let me come back! =)
Simple solution: Throw some ads in the free version, keep it free while you make ad revenue.
what amazes me is that some people still believe you should get something for free … gametap is not taking anything away from its free members … you are still getting games for free.
With the recent ownership change, GameTap will soon be available to the rest of the world. GameTap for $60 a year is a poor gamer’s dream - I’m a very poor student, and it fits nicely into my tax refund budget. I have constantly changing games for the rest of the year. Think about saving your pennies and investing in this!!
If you have been able to get us EU citizens the possibility to use Gold Member, then it would have been OK!
But YOU DONT!
WTF!!!
So dont come and say that this is a good deal!!!
Or have you thought about fixing this???
WHY dont you care about us???
What if you just put a ton of advertisements before playing the game? Would you economically still be able to economically make the games free?
What about the free online games?
Don’t get me wrong i love game tape butt why should i pay when i have World of War craft for my pc and i pay for that so why would i pay for game tap I did for about a yr butt i get into WOW so i didn’t play game tap in tell they got better games on the free spot butt now they are taking them off so i have nothing to play on game tap
well i dont know about u guys/girls, but it worked for me ive been wanting to go gold for a while now and now that i dont have the free games to keep me from wanting to spend my money and just be happy with them, im gonna buy the year tomorrow!
GO GAMETAP!!!
WTF! im sorry im quiting gametap how stupid all the games i have on that list are going not to be free.PSHH
I understand both sides, but I fit on the WTH crowd’s side. Yes it was a free service, and people are so used to getting everything for free you baby whiners blah blah blah. But the point is this is an immediate move. They have given everyone 5 days warning. I was a Gold member for about 2-3 years, cancelling due to budget cuts two months ago, and I have now invested a LOT of time in some of these free games. No I can’t all of a sudden find money that I don’t have. So basically the time I have invested in these free games they declaring worthless, and throwing away for me. Time wasted, which wouldn’t have been if there was any type of advanced warning. Basically saying their dollar bills made from getting people hooked then springing this trap on them is worth more than their customers. No thanks, I don’t like doing business with people that treat their customers like that. And don’t even think of making the analogy of being the kid playing demo games only, as I said, I was a subscriber for awhile, and had planned on coming back once I had other things in order. Now, no chance.
Pah! Lousy economy! I HATE IT! Not that I blame gametap for what they are doing(I mean, they’re a busisness, they’re trying to make money, right?), but I just can’t believe the economy is forcing them to do this. Oh well, maybe someday, I will get a gold membership anyways, seeing that the offer they make for all of those games is quite a bargin indeed…………….
Still, sad to see the large part of the f2p gametap community is going to be gone. Oh well………
Thank you GT for allowing me to experience hidden treasures such as Dark Stalkers and Cannon Fodder. Alas, it does make me sad to see them go but I realize why you did what you did and cannot complain. Luckily, I can still use my uncle’s gold account ^^.
That is a very modest decision but I need not worry because I have a gold membership. Thanks for the update.
sign of the times i guess truth is i wold hope they come out with a silver program let use choose a few game to play for less money or even a list of these game ..hummuf
as for the games themself i cant say it worth $60 for bugged games like fallout that i cant even get to load without a white all over the place . If all the game worked and there was all old ones like xcom 1 tho 3 and others that sit on the bookself next to my computer that i cant play without more other programs that dont work all the time. add more old games throw in a few of the newer old game (?)
and i would pay if they work 99% of the time
So…anyone who’s complaining about the games that will no longer be free, answer this question: where else can you find 40 full games for free?
Wow, you guys are a bunch of whiners.
Unless I’m mistaken, at one time the ONLY games that GameTap had for free were the free samples that were rotated in and out periodically. They still are keeping some games for free indefinitely, so be happy with what you have. If it’s not enough to entice you to stay with the service, then uninstall it.
If anything, GameTap is being very forthright about why they are making some games for gold members only.
I can guarantee you that there will be plenty of current Free members that will become Gold members because of this. Of course, these people will not find reason to post about it here.
I personally will not sign up for the Gold service since I had major stability issues and could not play many games for which my system exceeded the minimum specs. That said, I wish all the best for GameTap in the future and will probably still play their games as a Free member every so often.
This is a joke, your already getting payed by adds for the games, ok games like dues ex and the other new ones i understand, but come on 1942 thats just a joke, you cant buy that game anymore for feck sake.
ARGH! Just when I was getting somewhere on warlords! Ah well its understandable in this global recession. I can’t pay for a GOLD yet, but when I can, I’ll be sure to pick up on all my old games, because I’ll always feel that a $60.00 entertainment budget is worth the inconvenience. Sorry to our European friends who can’t go GOLD, keep pushing for ‘tap to change their ways. Wish I’d known sooner…
the big question is how is this “some games”? i would call it many, but uhmm… ok..
well, it was an honor to play those games. i liked 70% of those (the other 30% i couldn’t play, either vista or my CPU was too low). well, if i get a gaming bug, i’ll use my MCR to get trials. either way, good luck in the future tappers
Deus-Ex I understand, but 1942? That list contains every free game gametap has. The free service was unstable, causing my PC to reboot on game startup, many, many times-not something I would consider paying for.
In this economy things like gametap are a luxury pretty much everyone can do without. Not a very smart business decision. Why would people visit the site now at all? Not internet traffic=no advertising… 2+2=?
dudes just use obama’s stimulus package to buy a subscription.
I hope that GameTap makes some kind of compromise for Europe; maybe a “Silver” option as someone else suggested, with all the games that are currently free.
Wow, i was having so much fun with the free games, but now they got rid of EVERYTHING
thats just BS, was gonna become a gold member but
this just turned me off. -.-
There weren’t that many games that are going back to gold that I wanted to play anyway. I don’t particularly care for the service, but there are a couple of games that I play on rare occasion that will still be free, so I’ll come back for those when I have gotten through my other games (subscription and otherwise).
This makes me rather sad to be honest. As an european i can not subcribe, so the only way to enjoy GT is going the freebie way. I swear to you that if i coul subscribe i would but now there are no more games for us europeans left so i gues most of us wil uninstall and never look back and that’s really a shame cause i loved GT…
*sigh*
Just remember, GameTap, all the complainers wouldn’t have paid you a dime anyway, so you’re not losing sales.
Further, because they are not paying, nor will they ever be, their opinions mean naught because they are not “customers”.
I enjoyed the free games, and appreciate you giving them to us for so long. I’ll probably sign up for Gold (again) when I have some more time to play games, paying for the privilege like all of mankind has done since the beginning of time.
while i can see gametap’s point to some extent, on the other hand some of us literaly don’t have the money to pay for a subscription, so we have to stay with the free portion of the service. while i would have liked to see at least some other games come to the free side of the service, i’ll just have to leave it at that and say that it was fun while it lasted.
Great, now that all of the games I play are gold only and all of my counsoles are broken I’m going to go huddle in a corner and die. Yay.
No Locutus442, you are quite wrong about that. Offering free games brings traffic, and with traffic there is a percentage who will decide to subscribe. It advertising, pure and simple. Why do you think they did it in the first place? I was brought to Gametap because of a free game (one of those now being removed) and I tried to subscribe repeatedly but the service is not available in my country. Now that I have no reason to return, if they ever change their policy I might never hear about it. I am just a single datapoint of course, but I’m not unique.
Brett…that was rich!
I think that is not fair not everyone don’t have to subscribe maybe people don’t have the time to pay all the time I think someone should do something about it.
wow you guys got free games for a while stop whining about it. i never used gametap before but this is just ridiculous. you act like they did something horrible by letting people play games for free for quite a while. quit complaining.
I have a slightly different complaint/take on this. I signed up for the Gametap experience because I was looking for something that was free- that came with advertising. In other areas of the world- the idea is catching on, that you can provide games for free, and make you’re money off advertising. My kids play on Iwin- every 5 minutes there’s an annoying ad for 15-30 seconds… it is definitely annoying, but it is free… and for those watching their budgets- it’s a decent trade off… Mind you that site is mostly for kids…so I was looking for something like Gametaps free list- for adults. I was actually surprised that they had decent games for free, and their advertising was limited. I would suggest to Gametap that they could look into increasing the advertising arena instead of eliminating free games…
while this sucks and all, there a company, suck it up
I see both sides of the argument. On one hand, people like free stuff. On the other, People have to eat. Now, Here’s what strikes me. They had a great business model, “we’ll give you the first game in a series, two if it’s large, and to see the next part, you have to pay.” That’s a great business model. Your first taste is free. That’s what got me into Fallout. Which got made me get Fallout 3. I WAS going to switch to gold AFTER I beat the game (ONLY after I beat the game.) But, now that isn’t going to happen because I can’t finish it because I can’t access it. Keep those games on the list, EXCEPT for the first game in a series.
Get them hooked, THEN make them pay. NOT the other way around. Why would I pay if I didn’t know if I would like it. It’s wasted money for people, so please, GT, bait the hooks and pull in the gullible suckers, I mean, Gull, I mean, Just make them free so that the plan I described earlier works okay?
Im a gold member, have been for three years. Im stating this just so many can consider this opinion biased instead of blatant fact.
1. Downloading Gametap allow’s you to see the archive of all the games they have on file, which you can do for free.
2. Registering a free gametap account, also allows you to see what’s coming in the far and near future for Gametap gold members.
3. On each and every game menu, there are game requirement and special issues tab that focuses on the game specifications that you can match to your computer so that you can clearly analyze what could and cant run on your computer.
4. Reasons 1 through 3, allow you to see what exactly you get from Gametap, without getting gametap.
5. They offered free and still offer some free games to play, as a bonus for registering and being apart of the Gametap community.
The free games are a bonus for being apart of the community, whatever or not you’d like to base your decisions just on the free games is not of Gametap’s concern.
It’s whatever or not you’re interested in the actual service that they offer.
To argue the more free games they take, the less your interested. Means’ nothing cause your just trying to bargain free stuff out of a pay to play service. Sorry guys, the world just dont spin that way.
Economically speaking by the way, most games now cost about $60 bucks a pop. Gametap has a $60 dollars a year plan.
Economically, for every game my friend has, I got about a thousand more that I have access to.
The value of the dollar is shot, and so is my patience for people arguing about what they want for free that was never promised in the first place.
I am sure Gametap appreciates your particpation in the community, but disrespecting a service for making a business move that had nothing to do with you, isn’t supporting or putting down Gametap, just making you look like an idiot.
You….BASTARDS!! >_< Those are like all the good ones. Atleast leave some of em like Deus ex or Blood Omen 2! Please have mercy on my soul suffering from poverty!!!
why can’t you keep at least Tomb raider legend and hitman 2 for free? these both were the only games that would make me subscribe to game tap!
Can someone please clear something up for me? I just “discovered” Gametap and was delighted to see realMYST as a free download. Does this mean if it’s taken off the “free” list it will be disabled somehow on my computer? Or does this pertain only to the games people play online. How can they “take back” a game you’ve already downloaded? Thanks for any insight here. %:-)
well i can understand removing some games from the free games vault but 97 of them is just going over board there only about 5 games that i can see that are free to play as multiplayers out of the 20-30 there used to be, but i just cannot understand just why this has had to happen all of a sudden i mean you coulda taken one down like every 2 months or so but yall took the entire games stack, not really moving out of the free gametap commmunity players and very less fulfilling to newcomers just having to all of a sudden pay to play
[got a new keyboard] Well, here’s an idea: institute a small price for games, say 25 - 50c for a game. That way, people who get only one game can still enjoy themselves, but you still get money. Also, for some of the more popular games, such as Fallout, it could be $1 or so, so the money AND player count jumps.
I don’t get it, what do you mean by the 3rd paragraph?
There’s a shock, stupid gamer fanboys coming to the aid of another corporation that doesn’t actually care about them, as if their own families were insulted.
Here’s another non-surprise, a service that advertises as free, becomes subscription based when you take them up on the advertised offer and, people are upset? No shit.
The morons wit the hyperbolic straw men arguments like “you expect everything for free” are about as brain dead as they come.
Everything? Please. Something from a commercial that says PLAY %#!$ing FREE? Yeah.
Oh and no thanks GT, I don’t need to pay a subscription fee to play really old games. If I’m going to pay a regular fee it’ll be for Gamefly or an MMO.
I side with Gametap on this one. Service provision is an expensive thing to provide. Besides, licensing may make free games an losing proposition. Furthermore, there are reasons corporations charge for their products: Profit must be made in order for the company to improve.
Is not spam, it is only my commercial offer. Sorry if i mistake of topic!
