My Screen... It's Full Of Games!

Today GameTap released the 4.1 update to the GameTap player and website. This update contains various bug fixes and optimizations as well as the re-introduction of several key features. This update will install automatically the next time you log in to GameTap.com

New Features:

  • In-browser games can now be played in full-screen. Just click the full-screen button or hit “Alt+Enter” on your keyboard. If you have multiple monitors you can swap screens by hitting “Alt+1″ or “Alt+2″
  • In-browser games now have volume controls
  • Progress bar for downloading in-browser games
  • Games can now be launched before the download is complete, just look for the progressive download marker in your download manager
  • When launching a PC game you browser is automatically minimized

Known Issues:

  • IE7 users may experience issues with player stability when opening GameTap in multiple tabs
  • The download manager may require a refresh of the page to update changes you’ve made to the download queue
  • While playing full-screen, in-browser games that require mouse control, you may need to hit “Shift+Esc” more than once to regain mouse control.

Fantastic. Keep up the good work.

Oh, and make that IE7 bug a low priority. ;) :P

Finally back on track. *crosses fingers for Yummy soon*

Firefox was always having stability issues when tabbed, but that’s avoidable, since it dls regardless of where on the site you’re looking…

This latest update is a disaster! Downloads break, games won’t load ! Nothing works! I am about 1 day away from cancelling my subsctription. I have not been able to play anything for a week and want my account pro-rated for all the down time. The web interface has been awful from the beginning and it’s getting worse instead of better. The game manuals are all gone too.

Yet still no 64 bit support for PC games.

» Penquin said: Jul 23, 2009

The reason 64-bit isn’t supported is because Extant, the encryption scheme they use, which was basically the only one for Digital Distro services like GameTap when GT launched, doesn’t support 64-bit and is making no effort to support it. A month or so back they said they’re going to start encrypting with Yummy instead of Extant soon, and then re-encrypt older games in order of popularity. Re-encrypting and re-testing ~500 games isn’t exactly a quick process.

64 bit OS’s have been around for quite a number of years now, and with the launch of Vista, moved into the main stream. There is no reason for the support to not be there short of the company being poorly run.

The Steam stat page indicates about 10% of their user base is on a 64-bit OS. When Windows 7 hits the shelves this October, watch that number jump. GameTap needs to step up, and fast.

Dear representative of the Lovecraftian elder gods.

I tried to enter a support request through that page and it is broken for me as well. I have been a professional software engineer for 20+ years and my systems are all up to date and running smoothly. I have been on the service for a couple of years and am just about at the end of my patience.

Works fine for me… though out of an obsessive compulsive habit I frequently dump my software and redo everything. On one machine, I did let it update, and it didn’t let me down.

I finally got something to work yesteday (after 4 failed and restarted downloads) on my other computer and now this morning it has failed again. The point here is that the system worked fine as a desktop client for years. I did not ask to participate in a beta program and in fact was not given the choice. I see that that server has no trouble downloading ads and filler and other nonsense but not the paid for content. I also find the error messages and the associated help pages to be very unhelpful indeed. Spurious error messages about corrupted game files which are clearly not true are of no help at all.
