Seeing You In Action Is A Joke, Kid.

It is with a heavy heart I deliver some bad news today. During the recent merger of Bliz-Acti-Vendi some properties switched hands and as a result we lost the rights to several classic Sierra titles. These games will be removed from GameTap this month on June 30th. I assure you that we fully recognize the importance of these games and love them as much as you. We will be doing everything in our power to track down and negotiate with the current rights holders. Hit the jump to see the 24 outbound games.

Baldur’s Gate
Baldur’s Gate 2
Empire Earth
Homeworld
Homeworld 2
Hoyle Backgammon and Cribbage
Hoyle Card Games 2004

It’s sad to see all the Baldur’s Gate engine game going away. I hope you can get them back. Do the games automatically delete themselves from the hard drive or are they just unplayable until/if they return?

» Admiral Frosty said: Jun 15, 2009

Wow, this sucks. Those are some of the best games on the service!

» Kistaro said: Jun 15, 2009

I have no more reasons to buy the Premium Pack- even if anything other than browser games worked on my computer. Classic Pack it is… if I renew at all in October.

» kefkakrazy said: Jun 15, 2009

Ouch. That’s a serious blow.

Hope you manage to track down the rights holders and make them offers they can’t refuse, that’s a pretty nasty chunk out of the “best games on Gametap” list right there. Especially Planescape: Torment.

» GametapMakesMeFrown said: Jun 15, 2009

I wouldn’t have signed up for premium minus these games… between the change over from a working player to the web player, lack of 64 bit encryption (can only play crappy emulator games on my new computer), and losing these games, no chance I will renew. Terrible business decisions and then having something like this happen (not under Gametap’s control) but only further pushes customers out the door.

It is VERY sad to see these games go. I was going to buy a premium pack, too. I think i still will though. But those games are the whole reason I started Using Gametap! As much as it pains me to see them unavailable, it’s bad business sense to just let them go. Please do whatever you can to get the rights back.

This is what I get for not playing Baldur’s Gate fast enough. :(

Stupid Activision, becoming the new EA while EA becomes the new…I dunno what they are now, but they’re not Activision.

I would recommend rolling out some great Metaboli rpgs to fill the huge gap that will leave (NWN 2 Deluxe and The Witcher come to mind). This would balance the universe and prevent any divide by zero catastrophes….

Edit: *that this will leave* instead of *that will leave* sorry

Well it is sad to louse the but I am sure they will be able to get them back after the rights transfer is done. And just because they louse a few RPGs and RTS is no reason to cancel.

» Aricene said: Jun 15, 2009

Hope you get them back soon. I have CD versions of most of the Infinity Engine games, but always wanted to try out Empire Earth and Homeworld. Lords of Magic Special Edition is underrated, too.

» Goldenspiral said: Jun 15, 2009

Losing those games is a big hit to the quality service. Even taking into account games already in the process of “Coming Soon to GameTap” do not outweigh this loss. It is unfortunate that current subscribers will have to wait so long before those games might come back…. or the Midway games… or leaderboards… or… oh well whatever.

On the flip side, I purchased a copy of Homeworld 2 (NOT from the GT store - I don’t support DRM like that) and it works perfectly on my system. When I tried Homeworld 2 on GT, I had nothing but problems and had zero help from tech support after 3 tickets submitted.

Oh, man. This needs to not happen :(

NOT BALDURS GATE!!

Here’s an idea, make a deal with a game maker like you did with the Sam & Max games and get some new and awesome games on here! I only signed up for the S&M games and the new ones won’t even play on my computer. Now you’re taking away the ones that my sister likes, and the sonic browser games won’t play on my husband’s computer so I don’t know if the price is worth the service any more. Go thee and search out some new and awesome games (that play on a crappy computer with a 32 instead of a 64 whatever that part is) and I shall support thee to the end!

» Narles said: Jun 16, 2009

Not the Homeworld games! Those are some of the most beautiful RTSs ever created. Please try to get them back.

» Somebody said: Jun 16, 2009

What a shame. I wanted to try Planescape Torment.

» Gavizuli said: Jun 16, 2009

Bah, there goes my hopes of Planescape going to the Gametap store (and thus playable, to me at least). Never before have I regretted taking poor care of my discs way back when.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not Homeworld and Baldurs gate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not all those Hoyle games either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn you Bliz-Acti-Vendi! Damn you all to hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats it I am dumping gametap and going elsewhere.

» Goldenspiral said: Jun 19, 2009

@ Gav - you wouldn’t want to buy games from the GT store anyhow. Most of it has DRM in the form of activation limits. After 3 you have to call to get more, and if GT ever goes out of business or removes the game from their service you are screwed. It also would have ZERO resale value, unlike a retail copy found out somewhere in the wild.

» Gavizuli said: Jun 20, 2009

Ah, never actually looked into the service - but I was alluding more to the fact that, for some reason, Gametap was the only place to have Planescape available, despite it being a relatively rare title with a relatively (for an older PC game) high demand.

» Hikari said: Jun 20, 2009

What, Incredible Machine? No…! I loved that game and it’s now almost impossible to find… I am sad now… That was my biggest time waster!

» Hikari said: Jun 20, 2009

Well, at least I can always buy the actual copy of Even More Contraptions… That is still pretty common. And I’ll HATE to have to resort to emulation for the first game

» Michael said: Jun 26, 2009

WOW. I just purchased this service yesterday, with the sole purpose being those D&D games and Lords of Magic. What a waste of money and the time I have already invested in BG II. I will be canceling my service after this month, but will renew as soon as these games come back.

» RaptorTalon said: Jun 30, 2009

Ditto Michael,

Except I was playing Icewind Dale until 3 am last night. Pissed is an understatement. Im calling to see if I can get my money back.

Plus nearly every game Ive tried playing on this service has problems.
