GameTap's 64-Bit Compatibility

Those of you who follow the Official 64-Bit Discussion thread are probably aware that GameTap is currently developing a solution for 64-Bit OS compatibility. Many of you have been requesting an update to the project’s status, so here you go. The quote below was posted in the on the GameTap forum by Tyrion, GameTap’s lead architect. As the project progresses we will try to provide more updates in this fashion. Hit the jump to continue reading.

“Let me give you guys a semi-official technical update on 64-bit OS support. I’m afraid most of the news is pretty positive, so hopefully everyone can handle that.

Here are the current facts about GameTap’s 64-bit development effort:
1) We are already several months into a relationship with a 3rd party vendor that provides 64-bit OS support for PC game encryption. We are not inventing anything new in-house, which means you should get a solid product and you shouldn’t have to wait too long for it. Our GameTap coding work is mostly an integration effort; the new software fits really nicely into our existing design.

2) We already have an internal version of the GameTap player that downloads and launches a number of PC games on a 64-bit OS. I was just playing “Prey” this afternoon on my Alienware laptop running Vista 64.

3) The 64-bit player will support background downloads, playing from precache, and all those things that you would expect it to do.

4) We already have a number of games in our legacy catalog that have been encrypted for the new 64-bit vendor software.

We still have some work to do to get all of our deployment processes and tools ready, but we are well on our way to having this ready within a couple of months hopefully.

Thanks for your patience. We know this is an extremely important issue for many of you, and this is the top priority project for the US development organization. As soon as we can deliver a quality product to you with 64-bit OS support, you will hear about it.”

It makes me happy to see GameTap moving forward for a change. More and more people are getting 64bit computers and now they wont be left out :)

Thanks GT

Thank you very much guys! Your new UBI titles especially make the need to run games on my desktop more of a priority, as opposed to the oldies but goodies that I play on my laptop.

I’m very very pleased to have seen this, i really like the service and I admit i was angered and confused is to why 64 bit was not supported

I’m extremely grateful and anxious when 64 bit will work and I’ll be able to return to the service and play what’s on here

As a GameTap member from almost the very beginning, I just want to say thank you. As memory increase and retail systems come pre-loaded with 64-bit operating systems to handle that increase, it only makese sense for such a great service such as GameTap to also embrace 64-bit support.

Here’s looking forward to Windows 7 64 and the end of the dual-boot system exclusively for GameTap. Thank you again!

Both mine and my wife’s computers are now 64-bit and my previously well-loved GameTap subscription is going to waste. Can’t wait for you to push these changes through!

For what its worth, on the 64 bit front. I started running Windows 7 (X64) (For the record I did install XP mode but it hasnt needed it), and so far all the games I’ve tried on GT seem to be working. This is the 1st nice thing Ive been able to say about GT since “the change”. I hope this isnt a just me getting lucky now. I do miss my old GT.

Oh and this is the RTM version of Windows 7 if I didnt mention it, not the beta or RC.

Some people in one thread(can’t rember where…) dubbed this “Yummy”…I hope Yummy will be ready soon!

Yes, good work. Maybe once you put back this feature, you can remove something like mouse support and then when you announce you’re working on a fix to put it back in, everyone can say how awesome you are for supporting your loyal users.

Ok, I’m done being bitter. Seriously though, thanks for working on fixing this. I know it’s probably not your fault, but was something mandated by your new bosses, who didn’t really think things through before making you guys hurt, what was a great service.

Um, Gametap has never had 64-bit compatibility, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about.

@buster42: New GameTap hasn’t. Old GameTap did. Old GameTap was so much better for so many reasons…

» buster42 said: Aug 17, 2009

“Old Gametap” didn’t have 64-bit compatibility either…

I have been waiting for this news for a long time and I really appreciate it. I’ve been a longtime member and kept my gold membership even though I have a 64 bit OS in anticipation of this. Thank you for the news!

Any update on this? 3 months later and only Trine and some race game is 64-bit for windows. No Prey, no nothing. Please provide an update!

If you look at the Pipeline, there’s a good list of games being set up for 64-bit compatibility.

I love Gametap, but it’s a shame I won’t continue my subscription until 100% compatibility.
