@jackstershamm, Only emulated games (arcade, console, dos) have 64-bit support at this time. Getting full 64-bit support is something we are actively pursuing. *hides nearby cats*
another question: I was able to play crazy taxi with no problem. When I try to launch grid, the gametapplayer.exe starts, but the game doesn’t start, is that consistent with the network problems being experienced?

Assuming it’s still the same encryption/emulation scheme (99.99999% sure it is) then there is no way for then end user to get the GT versions of the windows games to run in 64-bit.

Cuthy.. why, oh why, oh WHY did they have to go from the gametap client to a browser plugin in the first place? now, I can’t even get logged into gametap, much less play anything.
I’m not getting what was paid for, and I know at least a couple people that would be cancelling their service right now over this. if they could even get the gametap.com website to load.
You do realize, from a technical standpoint, doing everything via the web is going to increase the web traffied to gametap.com exponentially, which is sure to make the service run poorly even if you weren’t having the technical difficulties.
Yea…I don’t have any 32 bit versions…Der…Guess i have to wait till 64 bit is supported. Hopefully soon. I was gonna play fable until dragon age came out. Dragon age will probably come out first though. Well, I guess ill play the other games gt has for now…:)

This is an example of what drives me crazy. It seems that modern day developers are always in a rush and release software that’s not ready. I know that some people were getting antsy, but really after all is said and done, there is no excuse to release software before it’s ready.
I’m not a software developer, but I know heads would roll at my company if things were released prematurely.

I think I would be less pissed off a gametap’s unreasonable technical difficulties if they at least seemed sorry, but errors are always presented with this trying-too-hard-to-be-funny-about-a-situation-that-is-completely-not-humorous attitude. Instead of photoshopping a gametap logo onto a Simpson’s screen-capture, maybe you should work on fixing the problem.
While I know that it doesn’t have any actual affect on the technical problem, it comes off annoying rather than encouraging.

I think there is a guy in charge of say customer relations. He is supposed to make the situation light hearted and semi-”its okay nothing to serious” attitude. He is not a programmer probably. So? Why would you rant on him? He is okay and im sure they will have it fixed tommorow. And maybe add 64 bit support!(long chance)
It’s probably an attempt to get people in a good mood before they read the bad news, which is apparently not working.
Not much a content editor can do about a technical issue. Besides, everyone knows hardware issues suck. It’s not like they decided to pull it JUST to piss customers off, might as well try to alleviate the anger somehow.
Why not just leave it the way it was and improve on the software. Not sure if I like the idea of a browser interface now. I don’t even like playing Flash games….What makes this any better. I am one of the very first users of gametap and love having it. This whole idea seems like it is going to be a duplicate of what it was like when I worked for AOL and back in the days when they went unlimited use. It took them forever to try and make anybody happy and that is saying a lot since it has become a worthless cause in the long run. Look at them now. I will say that for a $10 an hour job. I made more than 750,000 working there for 4 years. Stock was great back in them days.
There’s not a download-able client anymore is there x.x? is it all browser based now ;/? will our games still work with trainers? do we get to choose where the downloaded data is stored?

**Ideas for improvement: allow me to use all of my widescreen monitor space when browsing the catalog and allow me to decide how many games I want displayed on a page (25, 50, 100, etc).

I got the plug-in going, but it says X: or Y: is mounted, tried a reboot, and no I don’t have any drives assigned to x or y.
After the poor support I have seen today at getting the site functional in minimal time. If I have any problem I am canceling my subscription.
A website or plug in is never going to be as fast or efficient as a stand alone program.

Well the site seems to be working again. It’s still slow, but it’s the normal everyday slowness the site has always had rather then the crippling slowness earlier.

well I turned off running the plugin as admin, and its telling me the game is unavailable in my country now. I’m in the USA :\ I’m not enjoying being forced into being a beta tester, and paying for the “priveledge.”
I just paid for a yearly subscription before the upgrade and now it’s saying I’m on the free account– this is really upsetting, this whole migration upsets me. I want the old gametap back, I don’t like the security issues that come with making it a browser plugin and I don’t like how much it makes my firewalls and software protection squawk. If I have to pay for another year right now, I’m not going to, I’m going to stop using gametap completely.

Whenever I try to download the plug-in it crashes my Firefox X( . This is getting extremely annoying. This migration is going anything but smoothly, and from what I can see about the way this new system works, I like the old system much better. If we could get some information about the progress - or lack of progress - That would be amazing. At the very least could we hear from the staff or administration. Can we get some information at where at the technical-difficulty-solving is at. At least the site is not crazy-slow any more, but nothing else in the site is working (much). I was getting a security certificate issue yesterday while there were technical issues going on. It’s since gone away for me. If its still happening to you, have you tried clearing your cache and cookies? I’ve heard of one or two cases where this fixed issues with the new website. (Cuz the cache still had the old website or the broken version still in memory)

This is an April Fool’s Day joke, right? The site is broken. After spending a few hours trying to get games to run, I have come to the realization that the BETA tag some genius thought to put up as an excuse for an unfinished site is a serious understatement. I would be more apt to call it an Alpha. MY X AND Y DRIVES ARE NOT MAPPED!#$@! AUGH WHY MUST YOU INSIST THEY ARE !$@11!!111!!!one1!!eleven
I really wish i had the patience and time to fully explain everything that has gone wrong with this migration in a more well thought out rant, but I don’t. Suffice it to say everything about this upgrade is pure, hate-filled disappointment. You even disabled the ability to unsubscribe from this new Hell (seriously, nice try at attempting to calm the exodus, but WTF).
In Summary
Pros: I can download games that weren’t available to me as a Canadian customer before. (this is probably a bug. or uh “known issue” LOL)
Cons: Nothing works.

The fact that you’re saying the issues are resolved makes me even more angry about the fact that mine hasn’t been. Unless something very good happens very quickly you’re about to lose a customer you’ve had for years.

Saying this is resolved is blatantly offensive. I was going to get the premium pack again but, unless something happens soon to fix this (or at the least you remove the issue resolved) getting the premium won’t be worth it
The technical issues causing the site to behave slowly, forum permissions and preventing the client from migrating have been resolved. If you are having additional issues, that is a separate topic.

I encountered the same issue last night. Here’s what worked for me. When that security issue presents itself again, look for a link that allows you to continue to the web site (it has a red sheild or something like that).
So, at work they have all active X controls blocked. I used to be able to post on the forums - but with the new gametap it is trying to install the new plug-in and stalling. If I log in, and try to go to the forums, I do not have permission to post. I also recieve no security warning or notification.
Is it true I can’t do anything on gametap while on a break at work (without any active x controls) now… other than maybe read a blog post?
Does anyone else’s update just freeze at the migration of games stage, right after installing the plugin? The window just freezes with only the black background loaded and sits there saying 20 items left to load.
Well, the site is running speedy now from my iPod’s browser. That’s promising.
I look forward to trying some games when I’m at a computer later.

I’m not considering cancelling my subscription, as I’ve really enjoyed this service so far, and I still have faith they’ll fix this mess eventually, but perhaps a refund for this month’s subscription fee would be fair. I mean, I’m doing their beta test for them by being forced to ‘use’ the new version (use is probably a misnomer, as nothing *works*) so perhaps I, as a temporarily dissastified customer, should be temporarily compensated for my service and inconvenience? I wish this had been optional, and I’m not sure why it was an upgrade at all, considering the old service had a good UI and worked just fine.

I think the folks complaining have fairly reasonable concerns — I, for one, feel like I’m suddenly now paying for a beta service that hasn’t been working. In other words, I am paying for a broken product now. You can’t run a service-based subscription and still freely mess with the software without making sure there are reliable backups in place — once you disable people’s access, you’re ripping them off.
And to have a massive outage on a weekend — when, no doubt, many gamers are using their accounts — is just plain negligent.
Sadly, a service like this is just too big to get working perfectly at launch. A beta, even one with a hundred, or a few hundred, people just can’t find all of the problems that there might be for all of the thousands of people out there with all of their different connections, and different computers. Which is why the site has a big beta tag right now.
But I do agree that it would be ideal (don’t know about feasible) that there would be some backup in place if this doesn’t work for people.
The site is working perfectly for me. I’m using Windows 7 and Firefox (IE8 doesn’t seem to work.). I’ve played some Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sam & Max S2E1.

To those unable to post on the forums.. try clearing cookies and cache. I had a similar issue this morning and that fixed it for me.

I really don’t feel as ripped off as some people here seem to. I appreciate that no service can be perfect and that even with the best intent problems do arise. Especially when that service is in my opinion dirt cheap.

Saying “problem resolved” and putting the onus on the customers when your know you are beta testing and your boards are being bombarded with customers experiencing the same problems is simply ridiculous.

I submitted a service request. After clearing my IE cache and cookies, I still can’t access the forums, my profile, and pretty much anything else that links me to my account. I can read the forums if I’m NOT logged in.
Not sure if this is a “known issue” but I never got an email with my playlists or friends lists in them.
Seems to me that some people are getting it worse than others…Besides not being able to download any desktop games the site works perfectly for me…
CROSS POST TO A MORE ACTIVE THREAD: yes I’ve opened a support request.
Well I’ve installed it into a 32 bit vista system with Internet Explorer 8. And I must say I’m QUITE miffed, it seems to have hosed IE8 (even with the plugin/addon disabled) in that the browser will work for a little bit (even without visiting gametap at all) but opening a ’second’ complete browser window will 90% of the time wedge, and about 50% of the time opening a new tab in the first (or only) IE8 window will wedge the tab. The only ‘fix’ is to go to taskmanager and kill the iexplore.exe processes.
This is completely unacceptable as now IE8 is effectively unusable and on a cursory look it appears that it’s actually broken the browser not just the plugin/gametap but the whole dang browser. If they tell me that I have to do an os reinstall and then upgrade to IE8 again and not install the plug-in, I’m going to go ballistic.
Add to that premium members being shown ads, being ‘forced’ into the ‘beta’ as of 3/31/09, and the security ramifications of disabling DEP for gametap processes and having to remove ‘protected mode’ from the ‘internet zone’ for security, and the problems with the install… This all adds up to make me pretty mad.
What the heck was wrong with the old client.. it functioned flawlessly for me for years.
If they don’t find me a fix that doesn’t require a reinstall… I’m not sure what I’ll do. My computer consulting rate is 250/hr so maybe I’ll charge them that for all the work that their shoddy plug-in has caused me.
OH to add to above prior to the install of the gametap stuff IE8 was flawless for weeks. BTW many of my work programs (firewalls/etc) REQUIRE IE.. so thanks so much for hosing my laptop.

Still getting ERROR 4100 when pressing the start button for downloads and when launching games via the play button. Also, downloads stall after starting.
Anyone else getting the whole “can’t have any drives mapped to X: or Y:” thing? I did have Daemon Tools on my system, but I completely uninstalled it. Nothing else I have mapped is touching that end of the alphabet. I know migrating to a new system is never going to be flawless, but so far, this is the most smooth, elegant, graceful Profit Limiting Maneuver I’ve ever seen any company execute…
Well another day gone…For those getting the x and y drive error, I was getting it yesterday.It seems to have been fixed on my end, anyways…Just quit getting it.
My big error now is, I cannot download fable, it just says it is, but it never does, and the minimal line to play is all the way left…No download button for it, just play button…
Lets all close our accounts one-by-one and see what gametap does with itself in the next few weeks. If they want us back bad enough they’ll get things rolling in no time. Ill start us off, my account is going to be closed in the next 5 minutes.
I spent 2 hours trying to get the plugin to work with both IE7 and Firefox. Firefox crashes and iE7 just stops working.
Fine, I had enough. Gametap clearly doesn’t want me or my family as subscribers. So I decide its time to cancel my accounts but I can’t get to my accounts to cancel because I’m required to install the plug in. The same plug in that won’t install that is causing my desire to cancel.
GameTapMessedUpTY, have you tried opening the Internet Settings, going to the Advanced tab, and using the Reset button?
If that doesn’t work, you can manually uninstall the GameTap web player by going to run and opening regedit. Delete the entry:
HKCR\CLSID\{C8AEB218-8B7A-4E15-AC17-0EE8D99B80EB}
(It should be the same on all computers, but make sure it’s related to GameTap before deleting all the same.)
Then open C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files and delete the files:
GameTapWebUpdater.dll
GameTapWebUpdater.inf
updater.csv
GameTap should no longer appear in your Manage Add-Ons. (It appears as GameTap Web Updater.) Hopefully, that’ll fix it.
You can add gametap.com to your Trusted sites list, which will run that site without protected mode and will allow you to keep protected mode on for the rest of the web. And I’ve found that you only need to run as an admin for the initial add-on install, and can resume standard user web browsing after that.
After getting the X: / Y: drive error once yesterday, I can’t launch anything at all today. Every Windows game is broken.
I can’t post a tech support log, either, because of the ongoing forum permissions error.

Ok so does anyone have a problem with their account not showing that they have a paid subscription? I have paid for a year of premium service and it shows me only as a free user and i can not play anything! Also in my account info it doesnt show any of my past payments or anything!
I’m agreeing with everyone saying that we should cancel our accounts. This is horrible. I’ve spoken to a number of my friends, and we are giving it several days before we just cancel our accounts and move on disappointed that we can’t have the old gametap back that worked perfectly and that we loved.
To the people that are saying they should cancel their accounts, don’t. I’m sure the issues that are occuring will be fixed soon. Give it time.
Where are downloaded games supposed to be stored? The website went down yesterday right while I was trying to do my migration. I successfully had the plug-in installed but but none of my games migrated. I have a friend who has had no problems and games he downloads just appear on his desktop and work. When I download a game I can’t find it anywhere on my system.
Can’t play premium games, accounts frozen, insecure plugin which is just a headless version of the old GameTap player (Seriously, you must had gotten tired of paying Nokia for a Qt commercial license) hence the axing of Mac support (Which was emulated mind, now isn’t possible because NSPlugin support overhead for emulating a Firefox instance and extension within itself is extremely nasty… and no fundamental WebKit support due to marketing folk axes possibility of crossporting back to OS X if Chrome ever gets support for a better written NSPlugin shim)

audio.dll description says GameTap audio module… uh what, this is a plugin for a browser, why is there an audio module when you can just use another nasty plugin like Flash which doesn’t use as much memory and usually is already running unbeknown to the user?
Shameless use of FreeType, zlib, Xerces XML parser, IBM ICU library, PNG decompression library, open and cross-platform components, plus Qt before you gutted it out, so just a note on the past player being wrapped inside of Cider for Mac users, great going you lazy bums. Next update is going to be written in a non-portable Java interpreter running under Wine on top of .NET without JIT using LUA to hook the API’s and more non bit-aware shoddy encryption as salt to clog your arteries to boot.
Still a hunky 15.5mb plus the extension which is duplicated, nice work! The extension effectively uses more memory than Adobe’s badly coded PDF plugin which at least only crashes the browser when you try switching tabs with multiple inline copies of the embedded version of the reader.
I have 25gb of games, all useless because of your DRM, and you are still hogtied to the idiots of TBS and haven’t learned from past, present and future contentions about web 2.0 cruft, which in 90% of cases completely ruins your image, not improving it. This is worse than the WebEx plugin, which at least works… embedded headless program sitting there using a plugin to hook the browser is negligent and unprofessional.
People want to cancel their subscription, so hire some more phone techs you’re going to need them. If you don’t make it possible for me to play Supreme Commander or Fable, you’re off my buddy list.
Before the migration you forced on us, I recommended GameTap to many people, who mostly haven’t subscribed, now there’s no chance that I’d ever encourage those individuals again to consider either company and their product. Only time will heal wounds, not charging me, and looking to the future with not blindfolding me with tainted fish bait and anecdotal rhetoric through subversion intellectually protected imagery from 20 year old movies which your lord almighty biggest interest partner allows you to use in your blog which no one that can do anything reads.
HawkSlayer: This migration has been going on for a month. Given how fast gametap has taken in the past to fix things they broken, it could take another 6 months or more. If that soon!

Day 2 and no reply from customer support– you knew you were having trouble with this launch, you knew it was going to be difficult, and you should have had customer support ready and standing by if you were going to jam this down our throats. When you finally find your head with both hands and a flashlight (hint, start looking around the colon area) you’ll hopefully have competition. I wouldn’t have signed up for gametap in the first place if it had been a (*&#ing web plugin that wanted access to my desktop and hard drive, and all my customer loyalty has been used up by the way this move has been handled.
The message coming through loud and clear is that you folks don’t have your head on straight when it comes to handling the service and you don’t know what you’re doing when it comes to managing the technology. That tells me that it’s not safe for me to override so many security protocols to allow your player access. I’d only let a /really/ top-notch system that I actually trusted take so many liberties with my system– and right now you have neither.
If I’m going to play web games, I’ll just go ahead and play one of the myriad free web games. Gametap used to be something different, something better. Now the only thing setting it apart is that it’s dangerous, frustrating, and not free.

@Rob Merritt You people need to give these people a chance. Their service is only $9.95 a month. You’ve only waited about 2 days since the migration. Just give it at least a week or so. Give them some time. They’re a great service who I know WILL get things fixed and working just fine.
Day 3. Still can’t get my service cancelled. Submitted support request and left a voicemail.
If I didn’t have to break all the security and protection my computer has in order to even get it to install (and it still won’t work) I would at least consider it. This isn’t a “I get an error or a specific game doesn’t work” problem that can be fixed whenever gametap decides to get to it. That is a day one in design issue.
Imagine if your cable TV service was being downgraded from 600 channel HD to analog and they were requiring you to use a box that doesn’t have a remote. One of those old clunky boxes with a clicker knob and 35 channels from the 70’s. In order to use this massive downgraded box, you have to leave all your windows and doors unlocked and wide open. The installer for the box delays his arrival for a month and he does show up, he is drunk and had an accident pulling into your drive way and knocked out your phone service so you can’t call to complain or cancel service. Now you have no cable TV, no way to call and fix or canceled the service and you are looking at the installer passed out drunk on the lawn in a puddle of his own vomit.
Thats what gametap is doing to me as a customer.

What the hell is going on? why change something that was working fine? I just renew last month and for three days I have been trying to play ,I can no play my games or any other game.Every time I attempt to download a game the screen freeze.Hellooooooo nothing is working I already paid for the whole year. Since the x:/y: drive error showed I can not launch anything.
I going to say one word…. It’s called “redundancy” Its is a common word used in any NOC center for equipment and software failures.

@ Johnny, I agree. This is rediculous. People are saying we shouldn’t complain because, “it’s only 9.99 a month” but this is a service. If you bought a meal at a restaurant, and it turned out half your meal was made out of realistic-looking plastic models, somebody saying, “it only cost you 9.99″ wouldn’t stop you from suing the restaurant. I expect to get what I paid for. I even wish I hadn’t paid in advance last year so I could unsubscribe right now and cut my losses.
I just hope they have some kickin’ games lined up to try and appease us after this gets fixed, I recommend Fable 2 or Fallout 3.
What bothers me is the lack of accountability? They are acting (on the there website) as if nothing is happening, in fact in order to find out any information regarding all the problems you have to dig deep on there websites. Most of the forum links are dead. Not good, we are not that stupid!
And why would they move from a client based interface to a web based system I don’t know. Personally you are asking for a lot of head ache, considering all the browsers issues you must deal with! And that’s what they did!
As far as the cost goes! You better believe that there is some competitor out there learning from the simple mistakes that gametap is making. This how the business works if you are not carful or accountable with your customers. PERIOD!

I have been a gold member for a couple of years now and suddenly I have been changed to a free account after signing up for that 59.95 a year special they were doing like Goldenavim was. Has this happened to anyone else? Customer Support hasn’t gotten back to me. This may be the end for me and gametap.

I actually got Civilization 4 to start, so that’s good news. If you get the x and y mapping error, just follow their solution links, the driver reset that you download apparently works. That doesn’t mean I’m not unhappy anymore, but at least they are starting to fix the problems
I am thoroughly irrated at the least with this new site. It is bulky, clumsy to navigate hard to find things and poorly laid out. As a paying customer I would like to receive what I pay for. I cannot even get to the forum pages when I log into my PAID FOR ACCOUNT! It says I am not authorised to view them. Yet when I do not log in, I can look through them all. It looks like a 1st year web designer put this together to save them money. Why would yuou put up a site that was not finished or working right? The web certificates do not even match the site and throw errors all the time and you login has to be redone constantly. I really liked the old ’stable’ player much better. It was very easy to find things and with a simple layout. Ever hear of the KISS principle? Keep It Simple Stupid

By the way, when most people offer a beta, they also allow you the option of allowing you to use the old interface. BETA MEANS NOT PRODUCTION READY.

I haven’t been about to access any part of gametap except for this blog for 4 days. Last night I got an idea and was able to log on via my iphone browse. I find out that my account is now a free account despite being charged just days ago. Because its listed as free, I still can’t cancel. From my iphone I was able to send a servicer request. Ticket 2224. In it I wrote that if they don’t cancel my account and I have some confirmation of it in 5 business days I will have my credit card company block all future charges from gametap and file complaints will any applicable business bureaus. I will also make it a point to let every gaming web site know how gametap has fallen and that they are a company to be avoided.
maybe instead of worrying about putting up clever pics from “The Simpsons” you (gametap administrators) should try to have the problems fixed. It’s been almost a week and still nothing other than telling me it’s my x and y drives. Why don’t they just go back to the “old” player that i never had problem one with and go to the new one once you guys get all the bugs worked out. I’m not a computer guy but that just makes sense to me.
I have got to say I am not happy with this. I haven’t had the issue of my gold account account being lost but that obviously shows huge problems. But I have the issue of my X and Y drives not being mapped properly and the fix was not easy I got to say for me.
By far my biggest issue has got to be searching and browsing for games. It is just simply not as fluid or easy as the player was. We can only search by genre now and it’s just simply messy and clunky with the current thumbnail view. The biggest help for this would be to break down the search filter more.
I won’t be canceling my account though I’ll hold out longer and hope things get worked out.
I’m really over this…. Your old format seemed bulletproof and was so much faster for dwnloads. What was the point of creating this new format? How is it designed to benefit the end user? If it is just for the sake of a different format, aren’t you simply rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic?
I always thought the aim of a company was customer satisfaction, though there don’t seem to be too many people happy with gametaps lasted move to the Browser plugin. It’s a shame those of you who have paid for what you thought you was getting, only to have something else shoved down your throat with out even a say how your money is spent. At the vary least gametap could do is admit that all of this was a very stupid idea and discount you all a few months. I myself was going to go gold but I was lucky enough to have found out about this first, so thankfully Ill just save my money. The truly sad part about all this is gametap will continue with this very dumb idea until you all start canceling you accounts. $10 A month is a great deal, but is it really worth all these aggravations. After all you can buy an older game for around $10 and tire of it after a month.
I’m sorry to do this on a blog, but i have no other way to contact anyone on gametap. I’ve tried to run the fix download and i’ve tried to unmap the x and y drives but nothing happens. Is there a difference between winxp and vista? If so, what?

I have 21 inch monitor and loved playing games in full screen, why not give people this option? Hope you guys are seriously rethinking things. By the way I used to recommend anybody I could who was a gamer to subscribe but now I can hardly stay on myself.

Fair enough, though it has been 8 days already. I’m STILL waiting for these issues to be resolved. Quite frankly, I don’t think this is worth $10 a month for an occasional good title to come out on what remains of this service. GoG.com and other online (legal) sources can offer the same for about the same amount of cash - while I get a permanent copy of the game!

I am so dissapointed that I am posting this when I am not the type of person who posts on forums. I was able to finally get browser games to work but windows games give me the error 4109 that it can’t map X and Y. I don’t have those drive letters in use and I followed the instructions on the rights for GameTapPlayer.exe
Loading my list of downloaded games/download queue takes forever like a good 10 minutes. My web browser even warns me about the slow script and wether to let it keep on running. The old client was fine. How can they kill mac support when macs are a growing sector about to hit 10% market share up from 5%. They should be working on growing the mac audience maybe and maybe even and iphone client.
with people that have 64 bit i would try to down grade to 32 if you can i had 64 and most of my programs woudln’t work i even subscibed to game tap and was pissed to find out that i could only play certain games and i really upset me i tried installing xp and messed u my computer had to go out and drop 108 buck to get vista basic upgrade 32 bit just so i could play game tap it really sucked
I have been trying for MONTHS to cancel my Gametap subscription. It won’t even let me log onto the website to try to cancel it manually. I emailed them in June and they told me that my subscription had already been cancelled–why have I still been getting billed then???? I e-mailed them again later in June when I was billed after “cancelling”, and they have yet to respond. I am SO VERY angry. I just want this problem to END and my money returned to me!

If you are having trouble canceling your subscription you won’t have much luck with gametap’s non existing tech support. You have to call up your credit card company and dispute the charge and/or otherwise explain the situation to them. It’s a shame it came to this really. I had been a paying member and canceled my subscription a week into this dirty diaper of a browser based gaming system. Today I figured I would give the site one more try. What the hay, it’s been 6 months after all, plenty of time to pull their collective heads out of their asses right? WRONG. Still the same old bullshit as in April. This is conjecture on my part, but I’m guessing when gametap got bought out by those frogs over at Meta that the corporate overlords demanded a web browser interface because that’s what all the kids are doing these days, this internet thing. Well I think we can see the result when corporate greed is put before quality and customer service. I hope and pray that the corporate ding dongs over at Meta are losing their ass on this investment and their short sighted quest for immediate profits. That being said, though I’m sure it a corporation overseas that is driving this bus off a cliff, the stateside tech support and representatives at gametap have been less than helpful and forthcoming. I understand you want to keep your jobs and all, but for christ sake, level with people already. At this rate you won’t have jobs in a year irregardless if you toe the corporate line or not. If you hired a lawyer and instead of representing you he sat in court all day picking his nose, wouldn’t you demand to know A) What the hell he is doing and B) How he intends on remedying the situation. Well gametap is the lawyer and we’re the innocent client being defended all the way to death row. I would think after the debacle of Windows Vista, that the execs at gametap would have seen the folly of releasing a beta product on an unsuspecting and generally happy clientele. Apparently not. Oh and speaking of Beta versions, if you have had this product out there for 6 months and it still doesn’t work then it shouldn’t have been released 6 months ago dip shits because obviously it wasn’t even ready for beta testing. In conclusion I hope that gametap goes out of business, that the frogs at Meta lose a shit load of money on this investment, and that whoever is specifically to blame for this atrocity of a migration dies from a severe case of herpes in the ass.
Get a life. Yeah, it might not be the old player, but it works for most people and is actually slightly easier to navigate. Plus, you can search quicker. All this whining is simply trying to bring back the old, when the new is still functional.
I have nothing against change and introducing new technology Squirrely. On the contrary working in IT I have to constantly embrace technological change and push it on others often times against their will. That being said when new technology rolls out I expect it to work or to have an acceptable number of bugs which are fixed in a timely manner. Six months is not a timely manner. Forcing a beta product, and I use the term beta loosely as it was pre-beta in my opinion, on your customers without any form of roll back procedure in place is just plain stupid. I challenge you to try playing on gametap with the latest version of Fire Fox (3.5.3 as current writing). You will simply get caught in a loop trying to update a gametap plugin. And for that matter, what about Mac support? That segment of the market stopped mattering on March 31st? So in the course of one day we went from a mature functioning platform which supported multiple browsers and operating systems to one that only supports PCs with 32 bit operating systems (XP and Vista) and Internet Explorer. Oh yeah and you have to use it and do the company’s beta testing for them. No parallel run, no roll back procedures, no recourse, no nothing. Wow, huge leap backwards. If I had rolled out tech changes like this at my job they would have handed me my ass on a plate with a side order of pink slip.
I can run it in Firefox 3.5.3 mostly fine.
The problem is the plugin is selective. It works 100% fine on some systems, doesn’t work at all on others, and I believe(Though that might be bias) that it works mostly well on most.

I did not alter my security settings for Gametap. It just worked.
Really, it should JUST WORK for everyone(or at least 95% of people), and yet it doesn’t.
Hmmm weird. I wonder if it is an OS issue. The PC I’m using is running W2K Pro. Not that it should matter much, but it’s the only common thread I can find. Both IE and FireFox get caught in the same plugin loop on this PC. Unfortunately my PC running XP home died and I wasn’t going to get a PC with Vista nor was I going to rush out and buy a PC with Windows 7 until I see what a reception it gets from the general public. If the issue lies with the OS they [gametap] should either offer a patch, fix the problem, or say that W2K isn’t supported. Either of those three would be acceptable to me. It’s just the stonewalling that I got that is so utterly frustrating. It’s almost like a blame the victim mentality.
I’m running XP32. OS may be the issue, or the plugin’s flakeyness.
